Uno dei luoghi comuni da sfatare è che Microsoft sul web sia una realtà in difficoltà e poco appetibile per gli utenti. Niente di più falso. Questo “malinteso” è dovuto al fatto che si fa riferimento nelle statistiche solo a quelle sulle ricerche dove lo strapotere Google è imbarazzante per tutti gli altri e a Facebook per quanto riguarda i social network, settore dove predomina incontrastata. Se andiamo a guardare con attenzione i dati forniti ad aprile 2010 da Ad Planner, ci rendiamo conto che la realtà è diametralmente opposta e Microsoft è la vera dominatrice del web con ben il 72,7% dei visitatori unici (1.124.000.000).
Questo risultato si ottiene sommando
gli utenti unici di tutti i portali che fanno capo a Microsoft nelle prime trenta posizioni della classifica Top 1000 Sites. Vediamo i primi cento posti in classifica:

Come vediamo Facebook è prima in classifica con 540.000.000 utenti unici (35,2%), seguita da Yahoo.com con 490.000.000 visitatori unici (31,8%), e il primo dei portali appartenenti direttamente a Microsoft, Live.com è soltanto terzo con 370.000.000 utenti unici (24,1%).
Ma se andiamo a sommare tutti i portali appartenenti a Microsoft nei primi trenta posti della classifica qui presa in considerazione otteniamo un risultato sorprendente:
